Foot Tap Amplifier from Michael Kontopoulos on Vimeo.

Description:

A system for monitoring nervous foot-tapping. Inspired by “Restless Leg Syndrome”, this system addresses the uncontrollable urge to relieve bodily stress by shaking the legs and/or tapping the feet.
The wearable component consists of a leg-brace which detects acceleration caused by tapping and shaking. Additional electronics are housed in a tethered carrying case, which can be rested on the back of a chair. When a tap is detected, a wireless signal is transmitted to a nearby stationary unit, which strikes a cinder block once with a chisel. Over time, the nervous tapping of the individual is externalized and visualized by the gradual reduction of the concrete.
Context:
Part of a series called “Measure of Discontent”, from my MFA work at UCLA’s department of Design and Media Arts.
This work stems from the concept of measuring and representing anxiety. I was inspired by certain countries’ efforts to impose quantifiable values to the “happiness” of its people—Notably, the tradition of Gross National Happiness in Bhutan. Or even contemporary magazine articles that aim to report the worlds “happiest countries.”
It follows that if you can measure happiness than you can also measure unhappiness. Taking this as my point of departure, this work investigates the idea of quantifying the subjective—in this case, national anxiety.

Jun Leehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16047335309968290240noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-625736163846604161.post-6915457767655070262011-09-02T10:32:00.000-07:002011-09-02T10:32:06.772-07:00Home within HomeDo Ho Suh
Lehmann Maupin Gallery presents Home Within Home on view 8 September – 22 October, 2011 at 540 W. 26th Street.

In Home Within Home, Do Ho Suh will present a series of works that reflect the artist’s ongoing exploration of themes surrounding cultural displacement and the co-existence of cultural identities, as well as the perception of our surroundings and how one constructs a memory of a space. Suh’s own feeling of displacement when he arrived in the U.S. in 1991 to study at RISD led him to measure spaces in order to establish relationships with his new surroundings. Years later, the artist developed the idea of taking these measurements and using them to replicate and transport spaces. Suh constructs these architectural spaces and the elements within them in various mediums including fabrics, resin, and Styrofoam. Among the works exhibited in this show will be Fallen Star 1/5, Home Within Home, and a series of fabric objects, all personally revealing works which invite viewers into his homes.
The maps and arrows record locations where Tiravanija has traveled and exhibited. There are recipes which refer to his practice of preparing and feeding visitors at his exhibitions. Interspersed throughout each of the three scrolls are repeated silhouettes of iconic art works by Duchamp and Broodthaers. Duchamp’s famous “Fountain” inspired Tiravanija to become an artist and Marcel Broodthaers incorporation of mussels in cooking pots as appropriated objects clearly influenced Tiravanija’s own cooking performances and installations.
Tirvanija was born to Thai parents in Buenos Aires in 1963 and was raised in Argentina, Bangkok, Ethiopia, and Canada. Tiravanija’s work is both autobiographical and relational to the societies and institutions he lives in and passes through. His work defies media-based description, as his practice combines traditional object making, public and private performances, teaching, and other forms of public service and social action.
Glass Bead Game is a science fiction story, in the distant future on Earth, in a European province named Castalia. Castalia is the archetypical ivory tower, an academic sanctuary where students practice a form of abstract cultural study called the Glass Bead Game. The game operates on the principle that every field of knowledge can be broken down into its component parts, and so the “beads” which make up the game are each symbolic of a “unit” of cultural knowledge or accomplishment from the arts, humanities, sciences, history, etc. The idea is that these beads can be linked and juxtaposed together, the goal being for players to share their revelations of cultural insight through making connections between elements of all the arts and sciences. -Rhizome.orgJun Leehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16047335309968290240noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-625736163846604161.post-32999848860159122312011-08-09T10:15:00.000-07:002011-08-09T10:15:06.233-07:00Music, Culture, Lifestyle and Fashion

The video represents the contrasts and similarities between the mysticism of the natural world (that is clearly visible through technology) and the comparative devotion of a shared belief, whether it is in God or a team, or the community that those institutions encourage.Jun Leehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16047335309968290240noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-625736163846604161.post-30966614808272675112011-08-02T10:31:00.001-07:002011-08-02T10:31:23.110-07:00A Pro-Peace/Anti-War ExhibitionJun Leehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16047335309968290240noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-625736163846604161.post-56108820324243684842011-08-02T10:22:00.000-07:002011-08-02T10:22:28.449-07:00LA vs War

LA VS WAR
Rirkrit Tiravanija has continuously proven himself to be at the forefront of modern conceptual art. Extremely social in nature, Tiravanija's exhibitions range from feeding gallery-goers to recording footage of a road trip and displaying it, along with the car that made the journey, for everyone to see. In this video, Cool Hunting talks to the artist about his current project as part of Absolut's 365 Days initiative in Mexico and the culture's attitudes towards art.
A British theatre company has been wowing audiences in New York this month with an unusual version of Macbeth.
The production, called Sleep No More, uses dance and visual theatre, and some 100 rooms across six floors of a warehouse space dressed to look like an old hotel.

Cool Hunting's latest video interviews Livi Vaughan, Associate Designer for Punch Drunk, who played a large part in assembling the massive interactive piece Sleep No More, currently playing in the Chelsea neighborhood of NYC. An intensely detailed set, Livi talks about the challenges and excitement of Sleep No More's decor and the challenges of inventing a driving enigmatic space that will continuously engage the audience.

About the Project:
A Grand Gift for a Unique City
From the salvaged remains of a decrepit Creole Cottage, the Brooklyn-based artist Swoon has re-imagined a permanent, interactive sculpture for the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans. We call it the Dithyrambalina. It will look like a house, but it will function like a musical instrument. A growing group of local and national sound artists are working towards interactive instruments that can be built into its walls and floorboards so that visitors can bring the house to life through their touch. Ultimately, musicians will be invited to play the house, performing orchestrated works at block parties for their friends and neighbors. This project is for the love of New Orleans - its architecture, music, culture and its people.
Swoon has designed the look of house and we have formed coalitions with everyone from architects to salvage suppliers. The next phase of our project is to create instrumentation for the house. This Fall our sound artists will publicly test their prototypes in a temporary installation we are calling The Music Box - A Shantytown Sound Laboratory.Jun Leehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16047335309968290240noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-625736163846604161.post-90715527803578359042011-07-25T11:44:00.000-07:002011-07-25T11:44:41.195-07:00QRadio by SWEZA Tape 01 Beatbounce by DENIZ KHAN

This is QRadio the new QR-art project by Berlin based artist SWEZA

So very cool

Jun Leehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16047335309968290240noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-625736163846604161.post-11447064679776958532011-07-25T11:41:00.000-07:002011-07-25T11:41:24.840-07:00INSIDE OUTJun Leehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16047335309968290240noreply@blogger.com0
