The Making of Re-Creation II

Bernardi Roig :: The Light Exercises Series

"If I had only one word with which to characterize the work of Bernardi Roig, it would be obsession. The artist is obsessed with death and immortality with aesthetics and eroticism, and with the "idee fixe" that the thinking man must reclaim his forfeited ability to relate to one another on an intimate level. He realizes that to truly communicate, we need a dialogue of more than the spoken word. Roig speaks to the viewer through his solitary man; the human body and its symbols, reflecting on the meaning of life itself. He forces us to confront our desires: the human concepts of progress and social change, which remain unfulfilled. With these illusive, undefined objectives the artist invites a dialogue on the multiple identities of contemporary man, seen in the light of art and philosophy. Each individual work of art explores its own deep philosophical question but, in its entirety, can be approached as a sequence comprising one story, that of "The Man of The Fire Eyes." The fire in Roig's sculpture burns deep within the mind of the subject. This man knows what he has lost and, still possessing the memory of culture and intellectual curiosity, clings to the hope its recovery. Our memories are often clouded with emotional baggage; each viewer brings his own experiences to these works and thus changes them forever. Roig's works of art are open to personal interpretation and non verbal communication; it is this, the artist's realm of unwritten poetry, which lingers in our mind's eye long after the works are out of view. For Roig, desire is the only thing that keeps death at arms length. It is this tangible proof that we are here, struggling to achieve higher consciousness, that defies the vacuum of meaning that exists in a large part of present day art..." - Claire Oliver

Self-fulfilling Prophecies

March 4 - April 10, 2010

Leo Koenig Inc. presents "Self-Fulfilling Prophecies", a group show whereby the works in this show reveal a swaggerless, off-handed confidence, and are linked aesthetically by their creators’ overt use of a myriad of contemporary tropes. Minimalism; monochromatic painting; use of language/text; ordinary objects made extraordinary by context; all these make appearances. But appearances can be deceiving, as this generation of artists have dissected and assimilated the methods of their predecessors, and have reinvented the endgame, completely fresh and in their own image. Instead of emulation, these artists have created doppelgangers of a familiar approach. Blurring the lines between irony and sincerity, these artists have obliterated the expectations of either conceit, throwing the viewer momentarily into a bit of a quandary.

Artists include: Adel Abdessemed // Dike Blair // Nathan Coley // Rineke Djkstra // Tracey Emin // Jeppe Hein // Zoe Leonard // Justin Lieberman // Adam McEwen // Jonathan Messe // Jonathan Monk // Dave Muller // Todd Norsten // Anselm Reyle // Tom Sachs // Jessica Stockholder // Banks Violette // James Welling // Johannes Wohnseifer

The show will be on view in both Leo Koenig Inc. and Leo Koenig Inc., Projekte Hours for both galleries will be Tuesday through Saturday, 10-6 pm.

BEHIND THE BLUE DOOR

Chapter 2 from ¨La Puerta Abierta¨ series.
Saturday 17, April at 5 PM Gallery FIFTY24MX UPPER PLAYGROUND México City, Amatlán 105 Condesa, fifty24mx.com

These characters (The Blue Men) can be classified as the shamans of the eternal spirit walk. Messengers and keepers of alchemic formulas.

¨ We can indulge in the magic of what´s inside the doorways of there super selves ¨.

Seen in their bare essentials (sometimes with pants sometimes with flip flops), all metaphors of disguise, they move between worlds via the French Caribbean houses and only the those that raise there vibrational force can communicate with them.

They mix the potions of above so below never showing there human faces and silently stalking the landscape aware of the unseen beauty and potential of human beings.

The Voice that Arms itself to be heard

ERRĀTUS

In her sixth solo exhibition at Galerie Lelong, Ursula von Rydingsvard will present three new monumental works that exemplify the artist as a sculptor in full command of her craft, further developing the vocabulary that she has so thoroughly honed: abstract, architectural forms composed of accretions of wood. Each of the three works-Bride's Veil, Unraveling, and Blackened Word-is tightly composed around a structured center and unfurls into a more complex, expansive configuration. ERRĀTUS - "wandering" or "roaming" in Latin - will open to the public on March 18th from 6 to 8 pm. The artist will be present.

size DOES matter...

Basketball legend Shaquille O'Neal is the curator of The FLAG Art Foundation's latest exhibition and group show - Size DOES Matter, from February 19 - May 27, 2010. The exhibition features 39 different artists from Chuck Close to Willard Wigan.

Weighing 320 pounds and standing 7'1" atop his size 22 shoes, Shaq is one of the most dominant players ever to play in the NBA. Throughout his career, O'Neal has capitalized on his size and strength to overpower opponents for points and rebounds earning him nicknames such as Diesel and Superman. Now Shaq takes the opportunity to reflect on his size with an exhibition boasting works from microscopic to giant pieces that have the ability to dwarf and exaggerate everyone -- even Shaq himself.

Artists have readily utilized the element of size. Large and small objects require different approaches, elicit unique responses from their viewer, and reflect the varying purposes in which works of art were meant to serve. This dynamic exhibition will include a variety of mediums that play with scale as a key component in the composition of the artwork. Every work in the show was selected by Shaq himself or is being newly made at his request.

Knock Knock: who's there?

In collaboration with Fred Torres Collaborations and Armand Bartos Fine Art, curators Elena Rubinfeld and Sarah Murkett have put together Knock Knock: who's there? That joke isn't funny anymore, a group exhibition that looks at the use of humor in art as a hook to tackle more complex social, sexual and political issues. From the use of parody, satire, wordplay, games and jokes, this historic exhibition, mounted over two venues, is superficially all farce, puns and gaff, exposing the embedded tensions inherent in the work when the laughter dies down.

Quicktake: Rodarte

On view February 11 through March 14, 2010
@ The Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum

Founded in 2005 by Kate and Laura Mulleavy, Rodarte is widely acclaimed for its daring and conceptual fashion collections. The installation offers a glimpse into the Mulleavys' unique process and inspiration at an important point in their career; recently Rodarte was awarded the 2009 Womenswear Designer of the Year by the Council of Fashion Designers of America and was named a 2009 fashion design finalist for Cooper-Hewitt's National Design Awards. Rodarte's creations feature complex manipulation of materials and other meticulous techniques evocative of haute couture through an American lens. The Mulleavys deliver emotionally powerful, dynamic collections that interweave extremely hard and delicate elements simultaneously. Recent runway collections have referenced disparate themes, such as the building and taking apart of homes, California Condors, Boris Karloff as Frankenstein, land art and Japanese horror films.
