I came across this article just recently looking up the story behind Shepard Fairey's Defiant Youth (click
here). Street artists have been appropriating images from the legendary documentary photographer Martha Cooper. She is perhaps best known for documenting the New York graffiti scene of the 70's and 80's.
Martha Cooper: I’m flattered the artists are actually looking at my work and liking it well enough to create something new based on it.
She is so humble!
