I came across this article just recently looking up the story behind Shepard Fairey's Defiant Youth (click here). Street artists have been appropriating images from the legendary documentary photographer Martha Cooper. She is perhaps best known for documenting the New York graffiti scene of the 70's and 80's.

Contraband

1,075 photographs were taken at both the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Federal Inspection Site and the U.S. Postal Service International Mail Facility at John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York. From November 16, 2009 through November 20, 2009, Taryn Simon remained on site at JFK and continuously photographed items detained or seized from passengers and express mail entering the United States from abroad.-Taryn Simon

Art Hamptons returns, now in its 3rd successful year. Life of Kareem Black

Kareem Black, a dear friend of mine, is a New York based portrait shooter and director that was born in Philly. In 1996 Kareem attended SVA on scholarship. After graduating Kareem began to shoot almost immediately for publication like the Fader and Vibe magazine. Kareem has won numerous awards for his work including being featured as one of the PDN 30. Along with his commercial work Kareem keeps occupied with a variety of personal projects including a series of portraits documenting some of the East Village's more interesting characters. Kareem also loves sushi, steak, karaoke, Star Trek and beer.

2010 Summer Show Project

The project was conceived as an opportunity for photographers to share and exhibit their work in a prominent and supportive gallery setting. The project is also about education. Together we will create an environment where 12 photographers can come together as a community and work toward a common goal. FOLEYgallery will offer individual guidance, feedback and support to ensure a dynamic experience.

For the 12 photographers that are chosen to participate in the project, this will begin a unique journey. You will all be working toward creating your own summer exhibition. A theme will be decided upon by the curatorial panel. You will be able to create new work while maintaining what it is that makes your photography unique.

In the months between January and May, you will be given personal guidance and feedback from Michael Foley on your newly created work. Since we are initially selecting work based on its merit and not a specific theme, we imagine having a very diverse group of participating photographers who approach the same theme from several different viewpoints.

Each photographer will be responsible for shipping, matting/framing and printing of their work. All work will be insured while at the gallery. To Apply for this opportunity and for additional info go here

They must be giants

What if you came home to see one of these gigantic pair of shoes sitting in the middle of your apartment? What would you do? Thankfully, it is only photography work--with an exaggeration of size and scale, of course. Definitely Petros Chrisostomou's specialty. The title of each piece is pretty bizarre too.
