Studio Visit

My work considers the idea that symbolic and ideological systems can be activated and re-imagined through collaboration, imaginative play and masquerade. To effect this re-imagining objects, bodies, and landscapes are constructed to immerse us in the logic of another place.

In many ways my works become the repository of the dreams and ideas of the many people who participate in producing and imagining the contours of the works. In the tradition of the fable or folk story, I map the desires and ideas of people to create narratives that attempt to be relevant to a contemporary audience.-Saya Wolkfalk Artist Statement

Visited Simone Leigh today at the Studio Museum in Harlem.
Her sensual ceramics are by no means traditional. Article on Simone in ARTINFO click here. Also, check out her website by clicking here.

Studio Visit

Studio Visit, P.S.1’s new web initiative that offers virtual presentations of artists’ studios. Emerging artists working in the five boroughs and greater New York area are invited to upload video or still images of their studios and work. Artists’ submissions will be present on the website for at least one month.

Studio Visit will serve as an online artistic hub and provide viewers a look at the varied artistic practices located within one city.

Printed Matter

Tom Beale introduced me to an artist who shares a studio in his building. Midori Harima. Midori collects images from books, magazines and the internet. and converts them into black and white copies then she fabricates hollow sculptures.  In her artist statement Midori explains "The hollow figure, its surface covered with fragments of Xeroxed images, corresponds to how we perceive objects in an information intensive society. By transferring symbolic media images into the sphere of actual existence I aim to shift from automatic, brain-centered understanding triggered by visual information to a holistic experience of seeing which accompanies corporeal and visceral sensation. This process is based on primal experiences from my childhood. I experienced media images and stories by directly relating to them as reality, not understanding them within a stable subject-and-object relationship; this frightened me and shook my foundation".  For additional images of Midori's work click here

Visiting Coby

3 above pieces are work in progress

Saw my buddy Coby Kennedy this weekend at his studio and he showed me his new paintings (revisiting the Old Master's style) and talked about his work, inspiration and his view on music videos.
