This work essentially chronicles the last 20 years of his life, his recurring themes and historical references. The maps and arrows record locations where Tiravanija has traveled and exhibited. There are recipes which refer to his practice of preparing and feeding visitors at his exhibitions. Interspersed throughout each of the three scrolls are repeated silhouettes of iconic art works by Duchamp and Broodthaers. Duchamp’s famous “Fountain” inspired Tiravanija to become an artist and Marcel Broodthaers incorporation of mussels in cooking pots as appropriated objects clearly influenced Tiravanija’s own cooking performances and installations.
Tirvanija was born to Thai parents in Buenos Aires in 1963 and was raised in Argentina, Bangkok, Ethiopia, and Canada. Tiravanija’s work is both autobiographical and relational to the societies and institutions he lives in and passes through. His work defies media-based description, as his practice combines traditional object making, public and private performances, teaching, and other forms of public service and social action.

Troels Carlsen works with and distorts our social, biological and historical heritage. Themes such as Darwin, alpha males, group mentality and the political and religious arena are strong undercurrents in his works. In a strange mixture between ape and man, he questions our evolution and our notion of superiority.

Troels Carlsen manipulates with genes resulting in a fusion between chimpanzees and gibbons on one side and the human body on the other. This genetic hybrid makes it difficult to distinguish man from animal and animal from man. In a new series of appropriated works made from vintage anatomy posters and encyclopaedia (many of them incorrect as they were based on the knowledge of the time they were created) Troels questions the notion of given truths and facts. In these works surreal worlds emerge from the rigorous formality of the original work.

Chong’s pencil and gouache drawings revel in detail and the exploration of line, form and gesture. Abstract images – minute squared punctuations seamed together by skeins of delicate lines – cluster upon the rich surface of the paper in a haze of plotted points. These purposeful and intricate markings, quietly articulated in gray on off-white rice paper, or with crisp whites on hand-dyed indigo Japanese paper, appear at once ordered and spontaneous. Connecting one geometric dot to the next, Chong infuses the work with a sense of lyrical rhythm, expanse and calm, tranquility in movement, improvisation. This intimation of music is in part derived from Chong’s accomplishments as a cellist and also her admiration for the work of John Cage.

Breakfast by the Light of the Moon is Perez's second solo exhibition at Galerie Lelong and will open to the public on Thursday, February 11 from 6 to 8 pm. The artist will be present.

Berlin based artist Christian Schwarzwald's latest show at Derek Eller's Gallery consists of a series of large works on paper which are mounted on partially painted gallery walls, challenging the viewer's experience of pictorial space. Aptly named Boxed, the exhibition toys with the notions of space, of negotiations between two-dimensional planar scapes and three-dimensional interventions. This quality is further enhanced by Schwarzwald's repeated use of the box form which functions both as a space-defining device and as a kind of presentation vitrine for the drawings within, giving new meaning to the ideas of enclosure and of being boxed-in.

Christian has had recent solo exhibitions at Galerie Krinzinger in Vienna and Nina Menocal Gallery in Mexico City, and has also been featured in group shows at Bonner Kunstverein and Kunsthalle Düsseldorf. His drawings are in the collection of The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

William Powhida

Brooklyn, NY, based William Powhida satirizes the art world from the perspective of an insider. He is blatant about dichotomies in society, and the contribution of celebrity worship. Powhida's work supports the belief that Pop culture and the avant-garde have melded.

In this detail from "ABMB Hooverville" (printed in The New York Times), he compares Art Basel Miami Beach, to a Hooverville. It was exhibited at Pulse Art, Miami, a satellite to the destination art fair.

Dan Perjovschi

Dan Perjovschi, Postcards from the World is at Lombard-Freid Projects through February 20th.

Perjovschi captures a multitude of expression with a minimum of line. He sums up poignant social and political commentaries into humorous cartoon-like sketches. Born in an autocratic Romania, now a renowned artist on the international circuit, these postcard sized drawings arranged in grids, are a narrative of his travels.

William Kentridge

Master draftsman William Kentridge uses alter egos Felix Teitlebaum and Soho Eckstein to explore issues of post-apartheid politics in his native South Africa. In this film, the reworking and erasure of charcoal drawings is documented with stop animation. While the characters survey and re-chart abused land, Kentridge defines a figurative role for the artist in society, that of healer.

The art of Tim Burton

 

I have never seen the MoMa so packed.  Last night, the museum was full of life, overflowing with contributors, special members and the die hard Tim Burton fans that lined up to see the special exhibition opening... it was hard to see the work between the crowd, wondering if there will ever be a quiet time to enjoy the work in silence... doubtful. Members preview Nov18-21st. Show opens to the public Nov 22-April 26th.
