Tchotchke Stacks

Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery is showing Tchotchke Stacks by Patrick Jackson. The exhibition will run from September 10th to October 23rd.
The works in this show are made of found tchotchkes, layered between sheets of glass and stacked to human height. All the objects are selected and arranged based on their scale, and ability to hold weight. Their subject matter is completely random and, for the most part, unconsidered. Materials are found randomly at very random places. The tchotchkes are arranged by the ability to hold weight. Strongest at the bottom and the most fragile on top. I was very nervous that I would make a mess of the exhibition by knocking over something with my purse.

ERRĀTUS

In her sixth solo exhibition at Galerie Lelong, Ursula von Rydingsvard will present three new monumental works that exemplify the artist as a sculptor in full command of her craft, further developing the vocabulary that she has so thoroughly honed: abstract, architectural forms composed of accretions of wood. Each of the three works-Bride's Veil, Unraveling, and Blackened Word-is tightly composed around a structured center and unfurls into a more complex, expansive configuration. ERRĀTUS - "wandering" or "roaming" in Latin - will open to the public on March 18th from 6 to 8 pm. The artist will be present.

Once stripped of their "usefulness", I ask, "how do these objects or materials grow, now that they have lost their original function?". I imagine that the resulting components have their own bodies and though accumulation are intent upon working together to grow an even larger body. As in nature, where specific mathematical principles provide structure while allowing countless variations, I create strict boundaries that insure a pattern, but within which the outcome is ultimately unknown.... Mary Miss is an environmental based artist who's sculptures boarder on architecture, landscape design and installation art. In Roshanara's Net (2008) Miss considers the well being of individuals and community improvement by reworking a 17th Century Mughal garden with ayurvedic plants and plaques that caption their usage. The plaques, formed from orange and blue pipe, reference the dwindling art of Indian textile.

Printed Matter

Tom Beale introduced me to an artist who shares a studio in his building. Midori Harima. Midori collects images from books, magazines and the internet. and converts them into black and white copies then she fabricates hollow sculptures.  In her artist statement Midori explains "The hollow figure, its surface covered with fragments of Xeroxed images, corresponds to how we perceive objects in an information intensive society. By transferring symbolic media images into the sphere of actual existence I aim to shift from automatic, brain-centered understanding triggered by visual information to a holistic experience of seeing which accompanies corporeal and visceral sensation. This process is based on primal experiences from my childhood. I experienced media images and stories by directly relating to them as reality, not understanding them within a stable subject-and-object relationship; this frightened me and shook my foundation".  For additional images of Midori's work click here
