Yuken Teruya @ Josee Bienvenu Gallery

Josée Bienvenu Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition featuring a video installation, new sculptures, and photographs by Yuken Teruya, continuing the artist's poetic investigation into the meaning of nationality and the fluid boundaries between cultures and objects. The 5 channel video installation Earn A Lot of Money; No Need Send Any Letter; Send Money Home First, is a maze of overturned cardboard moving boxes, some containing video projections, some housing projectors and speakers. As one navigates this Hooverville, the videos document the journey of small paper boats, fitted with Japanese, Puerto Rican, Mexican, and American flags, as they travel along the gutter of a street in Brooklyn’s low-rent melting pot of Bushwick. The title of the piece references a common early 20th century colloquial farewell at the Okinawa docks as ships carried family members away to South America in search of a better life.

The exhibition also features new sculptural work from his Dawn series as well as his paperbag cut-out sculptures.

NURTUREart Non-Profit, Inc. is pleased to present Eternal Return, a group exhibition curated by Christine Spangler and Tyler Wriston in our gallery at 910 Grand Street in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The exhibition features Jonathan Brilliant, Cody Trepte, Thomas Lendvai, Reuben Lorch-Miller, Judith Braun, Joy Curtis and Tara Parsons.

Calling upon Friedrich Nietzsche's theory of 'eternal return' for inspiration, the curators write "By applying Nietzsche's existential definition of a continuous return to every passing moment - thereby making those very moments palpable, intransient and solidified - one can transform an otherwise abstract notion into something paramount and hugely consequential."

Eternal Return brings together seven artists who fashion repetitive, accumulative, or cyclical forms from simple materials, resulting in works that are quiet yet psychologically charged. This interdisciplinary exhibit will include three site-specific installations made just for NURTUREart.

The Language of Flowers

Georges Bataille’s essay, The Language of Flowers, on the symbolic nature of the flower is a revealing text wherein Bataille draws parallels between the anatomy of the flower and the human body as well as his interpretation of the nature of seduction, beauty, love, and death as understood through the flower’s physical and historically condensed characteristics.

This exhibition takes Bataille’s essay as a starting point and aperture through which we can focus on different artists that have incorporated the flower into their work in various forms. The exhibition investigates a range of different works from such artists as Robert Beck, Louise Bourgeoise, Pia Fries, Ori Gersht, Jim Hodges, Butt Johnson, Yayoi Kusama, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Andy Warhol.
