Yoshitomo Nara: Nobody’s Fool is the first major New York exhibition of the Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara (born 1959), and features more than one hundred works ranging from his early career in the 1980s to his most recent paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, and large-scale installations. As one of the leading artists of Japan’s influential Neo Pop art since the 1990s, Nara is well known for his depictions of children and animals. Nara’s cute, though often menacing, children and animals are so readily associated with popular culture, particularly manga comics and animation, that viewers may neglect to contemplate his evocative imagery in depth. His popular appeal masks the serious social and personal dimensions of his work—feelings of helplessness and rage, and a sense of isolation in a hyper-networked society.

1,075 photographs were taken at both the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Federal Inspection Site and the U.S. Postal Service International Mail Facility at John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York. From November 16, 2009 through November 20, 2009, Taryn Simon remained on site at JFK and continuously photographed items detained or seized from passengers and express mail entering the United States from abroad.-Taryn Simon

What is beauty?

Stichbury’s subjects possess an unearthly, distorted countenance—their visages are devoid of life and instead exude a chilling sterility and distance that echoes the airbrushed simulation and uncanny perfection prized in postmodern conceptions of beauty. These portraits do not depict individuals, rather archetypal personas; his subjects are culled from contemporary media and pop-cultural imagery, spanning vernacular sources such as glossy fashion magazines, advertising campaigns, yearbooks and online fashion model go-sees. These highly-stylized portraits represent anthropomorphic façades that are as much elusive enigmas, ones that mirror the very fabrication thatoccurs when creating an idealized virtual identity within such social environments like Facebook, Second Life, and Chat Roulette.

Great video installation exhibition at Luhring Augustine of Pipilotti Rist. You may have seen her multimedia installation at MoMa, winter of 2008, Pour Your Body Out (7354 Cubic Meters). This is a much intimately scaled show, featuring 2 video installations and a chandelier made of panties. Yes panties! they were collected from the artist's personal collection as well as her friends and family.

Greenpoint open Studios

Greenpoint Open Studios is a weekend long event celebrating a burgeoning art scene in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. It is a collaborative effort between artists, organizations, businesses and volunteers to build a creative platform in which all members of the community can foster and contribute to a support system that encourages the sharing of ideas and relationships. Tchotchke Stacks

Nicole Klagsbrun Gallery is showing Tchotchke Stacks by Patrick Jackson. The exhibition will run from September 10th to October 23rd.
The works in this show are made of found tchotchkes, layered between sheets of glass and stacked to human height. All the objects are selected and arranged based on their scale, and ability to hold weight. Their subject matter is completely random and, for the most part, unconsidered. Materials are found randomly at very random places. The tchotchkes are arranged by the ability to hold weight. Strongest at the bottom and the most fragile on top. I was very nervous that I would make a mess of the exhibition by knocking over something with my purse.

Park Avenue Armory presents an extraordinary four-day, indoor Carnival that’s fun for the entire family—a whimsical and theatrical event combining the classic and the contemporary, featuring breathtaking performances and authentic carnival rides and games. With a massive fifty-foot Ferris wheel as its centerpiece, the Wade Thompson Drill Hall is transformed into a fantastical Carnival featuring an array of performances in a specially-designed theater, magicians from the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, and performances by stilt-walkers, jugglers, and contortionists. The Carnival will also feature picnic areas, a range of traditional carnival concessions, and educational workshops in the circus arts—including balloon sculpture, juggling, and pantomime.

Trapped wave

RYMAN manipulates and reconstitutes an inherited visual language, defining himself in relation to it. His intuitive and spontaneous process is propelled and determined primarily by the characteristics of his media. Manipulating materials such as wood, metal, velcro, Gorilla Glue, staples and scraps from his studio floor, RYMAN’s assemblages are physical and humorous.
